I'm always looking for ways to save money. At the suggestion of a friend, I have decided to make my own laundry detergent. She told me it only cost about a penny a load and so I had to find out for myself. I am going to keep track of how many loads I do and see if it truly is that inexpensive.
Making it ended up to be very easy (no complaints there!) and it looks like it will last a
long time.
Just a cup of each of these three things:

Add 4 1/2 gallons of hot water and voila! This bucket is full of detergent. I still have enough supplies to make this 5 gallon bucket at least 5, maybe 6 more times.

Wanna give it a go yourself? Here's the website:

Cool! I tried making my own dishwasher detergent but it left my dishes way scummy, so I ditched it. Let me know how your laundry turns out.

ReplyDeleteIt sounds similar to the version I use (same ingredients). I think it works great. I even skip the water part and just use it dry (1-2TBSP per load). Mainly because I don't have the time to do an extra step or the place to store a 5 gallon bucket (maybe I'll try it some day).
I was hesitant because I've always used liquid, but it dissolves great. One batch (about 1/2 gallon) lasts me about 3 months doing 10+ loads a week. I love it!
I have also been using a homemade dish detergent. The key is that you have to put citric acid in it. It keeps the dishes from being cloudy and streaked. I don't think that I save as much with that as I do with the laundry soap, but every bit helps.
Are you going to use it on your diapers too? I buy special detergent for them which gets kind of pricey, but it works to get out the ammonia smell and the stains. Would love to hear how it works out.
